EGYPTIAN ECONOMY: A BRIEFING

 

In 2016, about 27 percent of Egypt’s population was marked as being below the poverty line. With a 13.2 percent overall unemployment rate (24.2 % among women), Egypt had been grappling with the challenge of unemployment. Poverty and food insecurity had been on the rise for more than a decade. In 2017, about 17-20% of Egyptians faced the challenge of food insecurity. About 30% of the people were identified as malnourished. Poor infrastructure and poor sanitation arrangements across the cities exposed many of them to endemic diseases. The four most common diseases in the country were diarrhea, typhoid, hepatitis A, and schistosomiasis . ..
